Brief Bio

I was born in Coventry, England in 1957. I attended King Henry VIII Grammar School from 1967 to 1974, taking A-levels in Mathematics, History and Economics as well as studying a considerably more Latin than I ever needed to know. I moved on to Leeds University where I received my BSc in Mathematics in 1977 and my PhD in 1981 under Alfred Goldie and John McConnell. The academic year 1980-81 I worked as a Graduate associate at the University of California at Santa Barbara. In 1981 I moved to University of Utah in Salt Lake City where I studied noetherian ring theory with Ken Goodearl and Tom Lenagan and D-modules with Dragan Milicic and Henryk Hecht. In my spare time I acted (in French), taking leading roles in Sardou's Les Pattes de Mouche and Girardeau's La Folle de Chaillot, before being strongly advised not to give up my day job as a mathematician. In 1984 I took up a position at the University of Cincinnati, becoming a Professor in 1994 and head of department in 2001. In the 1990's I became interested in the new field of quantum groups. More recently I have worked with Jintai Ding on some aspects of algebraic cryptography. When I'm not doing mathematics or administartive paperwork, you'll probably find me playing either tennis or soccer.
