Taft Lecture
Professor Henrik Shahgholian of the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden and UC Taft Lecture Fellow, will speak on March 6 & 7, 2008.
GPOTS Conference
The Great Plains Operator Theory Symposium (GPOTS) will be held on Wednesday, June 18 through noon on Sunday, June 22, 2008 at the University of Cincinnati. A welcoming reception will be held in the evening of Tuesday, June 17. The main focus will be: classification of C*- algebras; free probability; subfactors in a von Neumann algebra and applications.
The GPOTS conference has been held annually for the last 26 years. The site of the conference rotates among various universities in the midwestern United States. The conference has come to be recognized as a showcase for recent results in operator theory and operator algebras. In recent years, from 100 to 150 specialists, including graduate students, have assembled for the conference.
New MS in Statistics
The department is proud to announce the approval by
the Ohio Board of Regents of a new
Master of Science degree in Statistics.
MAT Grad wins Top Award
Recent MAT graduate, Eric Blask was one of 22 teachers nationwide honored by the MAA with the 2007 Edyth May Sliffle Award for Distinguished High School Mathematics Teaching.
Workshop on Fluid Mechanics
A workshop on the Theory and Applications of Fluid Mechanics was held on Saturday, December 9 and Sunday, December 10 in conjunction with this year's Taft Research Seminar.
On October 2, Professor Ker-I Ko talked on the "P vs NP problem," one of the Clay Mathematics Institute's $1,000,000 "Milllennium Problems" in mathematics.
UC Hosts Regional AMS Meeting
The 2006 Fall Central Section Meeting of the American Mathematical Society was held at UC on Saturday and Sunday, October 21-22. More than 350 mathematicians attended.
