Financial Aid and Scholarships

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Cincinnati currently has approximately 60 full-time students in the MS and PhD programs and another 35 in the MAT program. Almost 50% of the MS and PhD students have full financial support in the form of Graduate Assistantships (GA), in general other full-time students receive UGS, and typically 2-3 students have Taft fellowships. MAT students are generally awarded UGSs for their summer studies. Below are more detailed descriptions of these financial aid opportunities. Additional externally funded research assistantships are also often available.

Charles Phelps Taft Fellowships:
These fellowships are awarded to the "top" PhD students, typically near the completion of their degree. Currently the stipend is $12,500 and includes tuition remission with NO teaching duties and a $3,000 stipend for the summer.
Graduate Assistantships (GA):
These awards come with a stipend (for work as a teaching assistant) and 100% tuition remission. Last year the stipends ranged from $13,000 to $14,000.  Duties include holding problem sessions for several classes and/or grading, typically 12-15 hours per week. Opportunities for teaching regular classes are also available.
University Graduate Scholarships (UGS):
These awards provide nearly 80% of a student's tuition and are available during both the academic year and the summer. These awards are available for MAT students who do their coursework in the summer. There are no teaching duties associated with this award. Students who perform well academically are considered for GAs when vacancies occur. Foreign students must also pass the Oral English Proficiency Test (OEPT).
Yates Fellows and Scholars Program:
The fellowships provide a full-tuition scholarship and a stipend for the academic year plus a waiver of general fees. No services are required of fellowship recipients in return for their award. The only requirement is that the fellow remains in good academic standing. The Yates Fellowship covers one academic year and is continued in all subsequent years of the recipient's tenure in his or her degree program as a departmental award of full tuition and stipend, assuming acceptable academic progress is maintained.

The scholarships provide a full-tuition scholarship plus a waiver of general fees. No services are required of scholarship recipients in return for their award. The only requirement is that the scholar remains in good academic standing. The Yates Scholarship covers one academic year and is continued in all subsequent years of the recipient's tenure in his or her degree program as a departmental award of full tuition, assuming acceptable academic progress is maintained.
University Research Council Summer Fellowships:
These awards provide a stipend of nearly $3,000 for graduate students involved in  research during the summer. The department typically receives 2 or 3 awards per year.
Isabel and Mary Neff Scholarship:
The Isabel and Mary Neff Scholarship Fund offers fellowships and scholarships of varying amounts to one or two women graduate students in Arts and Sciences each academic year.
Laws Scholarship:
The Laws Scholarship Fund offers a fellowship of $12,000 to an outstanding student in the mathematics graduate program.
Taft Graduate Enhancement Fellowships:
Enhancement Fellowships of $1,000 - $2,000 are offered to outstanding graduate students. These are offered in addition to the standard graduate assistantships.
