Who is eligible:

UC faculty, graduate students, and staff are eligible to get help from SCL. Investigators from outside the university are also encouraged to apply. See Policy in the selection menu for more details.

 How to Apply:

For any help other than walk-in consultation, you need to fill in the application form and submit it, via on line, fax, or mail. Contact us if you have any questions before submitting the form. When the application is received, a consultant will contact you within two days to arrange for an initial meeting.

The Initial Meeting:

All design consultations begin with a formal Initial Meeting. This meeting includes the new client, the client's major professor (for clients who are students), a graduate student consultant and a faculty member of the SCL. The purpose of this meeting is to describe the relevant background, research methods and goals of the project to the consultants. The consultants must learn enough about your project to effectively help with the design of the research or analysis of the data. You can prepare for the initial meeting by bringing along any information that will help the consultant understand your research. Please be prepared to discuss the following items:

  • Research objectives

  • Hypotheses

  • Design issues

  • Data collection methods

  • Statistical software issues

  • Progress to date

  • Time constraints

  • Other concerns that you have

We will get an overview of the project and decide upon a general approach for the analysis. Your consultants will arrange for additional meetings as necessary, and will also be available to answer questions by telephone and email.
